Matilda G. Armstrong

January 04, 1929 - October 20, 2010

Matilda G. Armstrong

Matilda G. Armstrong died peacefully on Tuesday, October 20th, 2010 at her residence at the marshes

Tede was born January 4, 1929 in Pittsburgh, Pa. She was the daughter of the late Robert B. George and Matilda Bryant George of little Washington, Pa. She was a graduate of St. Catherine School, Richmond Va., Bennett College, Millbrook N.Y. and attended Carnegie Mellon in Pittsburgh. She married Robert J. Duffy in 1950.

The family lived in Wheeling W.Va. Tede ran the bookstore at Wheeling College.

The Family moved to Tampa, Fla. in 1963. During her years in Tampa, she was the librarian at Berkeley Preparatory School. The family again moved to Naples, Fla.
Tede worked in the brokerage office of Shearson Loeb Rhodes. They moved then to Stuart, Fla, where she again worked in the Stock brokerage office. In 1973 Tede and her husband bought a tract of land on the ocean on the remote and primitive Island of Andros Bahamas. For several years she and Bob and her son built a cottage on Andros. There were no phones or electricity so they had LP gas and kerosene refrigeration, 12-volt lights and water was pumped up into an elevated tank for gravity plumbing. The cottage was used as a vacation spot for the family and is where friends and family gathered during holidays. The cottage is still enjoyed today; however it now has electricity and phone.

In 1987 Tede and Bob moved to Savannah to be closer to their son and grandchildren. Bob died soon after the move to Savannah. In 1990 Tede married Hugh Armstrong. They had a wonderful ten years of marriage. A few years after Hugh's death, she moved to The Marshes where she renewed her love of painting and bridge.

Her brother Robert B. George Jr precedes her in death, She is survived by her sister Judy Jennings of Tampa, Fla., her son and daughter in law Robert J. Duffy and Helen Artley Duffy, grandsons Patrick A. Duffy of Nashville, Tn., and Ryan S. Duffy of Savannah.

Visitation will be at Fox & Weeks, Hodgson chapel on Friday Oct 22nd from 4pm until 6pm. A church service will be held Saturday October 23rd at 11:30am at the First Presbyterian Church on Washington Ave. and Paulsen St.

Burial will be private.

Her son and daughter in law wish to thank Odyssey Hospice and the professional staff at both The Marshes and The Oaks.

Remembrances may be sent to her favorite charity, The Savannah Association for the Blind.
